Ethiopia’s Electric Vehicle Sector Attracts Growing Global Interest

Ethiopia’s electric vehicle (EV) sector is drawing increasing attention from international manufacturers and suppliers, as the country positions itself as an emerging hub for clean and sustainable transport.

According to Bareo Hassen, State Minister of Transport and Logistics, a growing number of global EV companies are exploring opportunities to invest in Ethiopia, attracted by the country’s supportive policy environment and strong renewable energy potential. Hassen made the remarks in an interview with ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Ethiopian government has introduced a range of measures aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to electric mobility. These include the implementation of a National Electric Vehicle Strategy and policies designed to encourage the adoption of electric transport nationwide.

Authorities are also supporting initiatives that convert fuel-powered vehicles into electric ones, while promoting technologies that reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

As a result of these efforts, Ethiopia now has more than 115,000 electric vehicles on its roads, and over 15 companies are actively involved in local EV assembly and supply.

Hassen noted that the country’s clear policy direction and commitment to clean transportation have made Ethiopia increasingly attractive to global EV producers, who view the market as offering strong long-term investment potential.
